INTERNET ACCEPTABLE USE AGREEMENT

 

Access to the Internet is compatible with the Library's mission statement and materials selection policy to provide informational, educational, cultural, and recreational resources in a variety of formats to meet the needs of its patrons. The Internet allows users to connect to vast networks of information, resources, and ideas outside the library. The library has no control over these resources nor does the library have complete knowledge of what is on the Internet. Information on the Internet may be reliable and current or it may be inaccurate, out-of-date, or unavailable at times. The Internet and its resources are always changing. Users should be warned that some materials that are available on the Internet might contain items that are illegal, inaccurate, defamatory, and potentially offensive and/or disturbing to some people. We believe the benefits of Internet access as an expanding information source far exceeds any disadvantages. Library users access the Internet at their own discretion. Ultimately, as with other library materials, a minor's access to the Internet is the responsibility of the parent.

 

GUIDELINES FOR USE

By using a public Internet workstation at the Colleton County Memorial Library, users agree to the following guidelines:

​

  • All users of electronic information resources such as the Internet are expected to use these resources in a responsible manner, consistent with the educational, informational, and recreational purposes for which they are provided and to follow these rules and regulations.

  • Responsible, ethical use of such resources includes using resources for educational, informational and recreational purposes only; not for unauthorized, illegal or unethical purposes.

 

ILLEGAL AND UNACCEPTABLE USES

  • Display of sexually explicit or pornographic images;

  • Harassment of other users or violation of their privacy;

  • Libeling, slandering or maliciously offending other users;

  • Violation of copyright laws or software licensing agreements;

  • Attempting to crash, degrade performance or gain unauthorized access to other computer systems and networks;

  • Damaging equipment, software or data belonging to CCML or other users.

 

  • Respecting the privacy of others by not misrepresenting oneself as another user; by not attempting to modify or gain access to files, passwords, or data belonging to others; by not seeking unauthorized access to any computer system, or damaging or altering software components of any network or database.

  • Further respecting the privacy of others using public access workstations at the Colleton County Memorial Library by not interfering with their use. Only one person may sit at their assigned terminal unless assigned to a tutor room. Sound from headphones should be adjusted so that other patrons cannot hear the sound. Small children are not allowed to accompany patrons at Internet terminals.

  • Making only authorized copies of copyrighted or licensed software or data. U.S. Copyright Law (Title 17, U.S. Code) prohibits the unauthorized reproduction or distribution of copyrighted materials, except as permitted by the principles of “fair Use”. Users may not copy or distribute electronic materials without the explicit permission of the copyright holder. Any responsibility for any consequences of copyright infringement lies with the user; the library expressly disclaims any liability or responsibility arising from such use.

  • Not sending, receiving, or displaying, text or graphics which may reasonably be construed as obscene as defined in South Carolina Code of Laws (Title 16-15-260). WARNING: This is a public library serving patrons of all ages. Some of the materials available on the internet may be disturbing and/or illegal. If you should access a site that displays material that may be considered illegal or pornographic under South Carolina Law (Title 16), you should exit immediately. Accessing and displaying illegal or pornographic materials will result in loss of your Internet privileges and may result in prosecution. It is your responsibility to know all applicable federal, state, and local laws for which the user may be in violation.

  • Misuse or abuses of a computer or Internet access will result in suspension of Internet access privileges.

 

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • You may sign-in at any available computer or the Sign-Up Station to use the Internet in the Adult section of the library.

  • You must have a valid SCLENDS member library card to sign-in or must present photo identification at the Circulation desk to get a day pass. Patrons who wish to share a single computer must tell the staff at the Circulation desk. Only multiple users are allowed to use the study room computers, unless specific permission is granted.

  • Minor children must have permission from a parent or legal guardian to use the Internet. A signed letter from a parent/legal guardian giving permission for a child over 12 and/or under 18 to use the Internet is acceptable up on registration for a new library card.

  • Printing from the Internet computers is available at 20 cents per copy for black and white and 40 cents per copy for color. Printing instructions are available to the left of each computer. Printed jobs may be picked up at the print station. Patrons will be responsible for all print jobs sent to the printer from their assigned terminal. Patrons must be careful to select only those pages that they wish to print. If in doubt, patrons should ask for staff assistance.

  • Staff will provide limited assistance for basic start up procedures. Orientation and training sessions are available at regularly scheduled times. If patrons need assistance in using the Internet or Microsoft Office software, they may have someone assist them at their assigned terminal provided that has also signed-up.

  • All patrons receive a one-hour session upon signing in to a computer. Sessions can be extended if no one is waiting. All computers shut down automatically at 15 minutes before closing time.

  • Internet stations are available during the following times:

Monday – Thursday       9:00 A.M. – 7:45 P.M.

Friday                                      9:00 A.M. – 5:45 P.M.

Saturday                               9:00 A.M. – 4:45 P.M.
